Roofing website SEO: a practical guide for contractors

White-label WordPress development for web design agencies

Roofing website SEO is the work of getting your roofing company’s website to show up when homeowners in your area search for roof repair, roof replacement or storm damage help. For most roofers it comes down to four things: a page for every service and every area you cover, a strong Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, and a website that loads fast and is set up correctly for search engines.

This guide is for owners of residential and commercial roofing companies who want more leads from search without relying entirely on paid ads or lead-selling platforms. It is practical rather than theoretical. Each section ends with something you can check or do.

Start with what homeowners search for

Roofing searches fall into a few groups, and each needs a different page:

  • Urgent repair searches, like roof leak repair or emergency roof repair.
  • Replacement searches, like roof replacement or new roof cost.
  • Material searches, like metal roofing or asphalt shingle roofing.
  • Storm searches, like hail damage roof inspection.
  • Commercial searches, like flat roof repair for businesses.

Do this: list every service and material you actually offer. Each one that customers search for separately should have its own page.

Build pages that deserve to rank

A roofing service page should answer what a homeowner wants to know before calling: what the job involves, how long it takes, what affects the price, what warranty comes with it, and what happens if weather delays the work. Add photos from your own jobs and a clear way to request an inspection.

If you hold manufacturer certifications, such as those offered by shingle manufacturers like GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed, name them on the relevant pages. Only list programmes your company is currently part of.

Do this: pick your most profitable service and make sure its page has at least those five answers on it.

Cover your service area without creating doorway pages

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Tips to improve your local ranking on Google). A roofer serving a whole county needs a page for each main town to compete in each one.

Those pages must be genuinely useful. Google’s spam policies describe pages targeted at specific cities that funnel users to one page as doorway abuse (Google spam policies). A good location page for a roofer includes projects completed in that town, local weather issues such as hail or heavy snow, local permit notes, and reviews from customers there.

This is how I approach location pages across trades. The Diamond Air Duct Cleaning site in Houston has more than 50 location pages behind a 32-page build, and my service area pages for Austin, Houston and Ohio follow the same thinking.

Do this: for each town you want to rank in, write down two or three real projects or local details before you create the page.

Get your Google Business Profile right

  • Choose the most specific primary category that describes the business. Google’s guidelines say to use as few categories as possible (Guidelines for representing your business on Google).
  • If you visit customers rather than having them come to you, set it up as a service-area business and hide your address, as the same guidelines recommend.
  • Add photos of your crews, trucks and completed roofs regularly.
  • List each service with a short description.

Reviews are part of the ranking

Prominence is partly judged on reviews. Ask every customer for a review when the job is finished and the site is clean, and send a direct link so it takes them seconds. Reply to each review. Never pay for reviews or offer anything in exchange for them.

Technical basics

  • Add schema markup. Schema.org has a specific RoofingContractor type under LocalBusiness, and Google documents how it reads local business markup (LocalBusiness structured data).
  • Give every page a unique title and meta description that includes the service and the area.
  • Make the site fast on a phone. Google’s Core Web Vitals targets are a main content load within 2.5 seconds, a tap response within 200 milliseconds and a layout shift score of 0.1 or less (web.dev). Large project galleries are the usual reason roofing sites are slow.
  • Connect Google Search Console and check that your pages are indexed.
  • If you are replacing an old site, set 301 redirects from old page addresses to new ones so existing rankings carry over (Redirects and Google Search). I did this for every page when I moved Advantage Plumbing, Heating & Air from Wix to WordPress.

Frequently asked questions

How long does roofing website SEO take to work?

It depends on your market and your starting point. A roofer in a small town with a thin website can see changes sooner than a roofer entering a crowded metro area. Expect it to take months, and judge progress by calls and inspection requests rather than rankings alone.

Should roofers create pages for storm damage?

Yes, if you do storm damage work. Write about the damage types common in your area, what an inspection involves, and how you work with insurance claims. Only describe what your business actually does.

Do I need a blog for roofing SEO?

Not at first. Service pages, location pages and your Google Business Profile matter more. A few well-written guides, such as what affects the cost of a roof replacement, can help later.
